In 1784 man first flew in the UK.
The Pilot was James Tytler, in his
“Grand Edinburgh Fire Balloon”.
Time and his country have all but
forgotten him. It is time to recognise
& Honour Tytler for his acheivements.

In order to make this work safely we have gone back to the design stage whilst retaining the shape of “the Grand Edinburgh Fire Balloon”. Back in 1784 we can only assume that Tytler thought that this shape would work even though he would have had pictures of the Montgolfiere Balloon. A natural balloon shape is a teardrop and clearly Tytler’s is nothing like this other than the very crown.

We can only assume that on take off his envelope would have been under stress. By taking things to the design stage we can engineer the interior of the envelope using formers and load tapes to create the shape and hold it.

There is only one picture of Tytler’s Balloon which clearly shows the ropes dropping to the Gondola from the bottom outside panels which simply wouldn’t work properly. The weight in the Gondola would cause the sides to pull in at the bottom, unless he had built a structure to retain the shape, however that would have added a lot of excess weight.
