In 1784 man first flew in the UK. The Pilot was James Tytler, in his “Grand Edinburgh Fire Balloon”. Time and his country have all but forgotten him. It is time to recognise & Honour Tytler for his acheivements.

In 1783 it is well known that man first took to the skies in a Balloon. To many the pilots of the balloon were the brothers Joseph-Michel Montgolfier and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier, however this was not actually the case. The Montgolfier brothers were only the builders of the balloon and the pilots were actually Pilâtre de Rozier and Marquis d'Arlandes. Almost one year later in Edinburgh, the first man in Britain was getting ready to fly his own balloon; James Tytler. After a few false starts Tytler finally took to the sky and reached a height of 350 feet above Calton Hill. His balloon was known as the “Grand Edinburgh Fire Balloon”. The TYTLER PROJECT is being put together to celebrate this man and his aviation achievements. He is all but unknown and we want to put this right. In the coming months we will be working with designers and talking with potential sponsors in order to recreate the “Grand Edinburgh Fire Balloon”, and fly it. We want to bring Tytler to the masses as our very first Aviator. To be involved contact us here..
